Rwanda is a paradise for bird lovers, boasting over 700 bird species. This safari takes you through some of the country’s best birdwatching spots, including Akagera National Park, Nyungwe Forest, and wetlands, offering a chance to see rare and endemic species in their natural habitats.
Arrive in Kigali and begin your birdwatching adventure at Nyarutarama Lake, a prime urban birding spot. Spot species like the white-faced whistling duck and black-crowned night heron before heading to your hotel for dinner.
Drive to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s best birding destination. In the afternoon, embark on a birdwatching drive, searching for species like the African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, and saddle-billed stork.
Spend the morning spotting savannah and wetland birds, including shoebill storks and African jacanas. Later, take a boat safari on Lake Ihema, where you’ll see kingfishers, cormorants, and herons.
Travel to Nyungwe Forest, home to rare and endemic birds. After check-in, take an afternoon canopy walk for a chance to spot Rwenzori turacos, great blue turacos, and sunbirds at the forest treetop level.
Enjoy a full day of birdwatching, searching for Albertine Rift endemics like the red-collared babbler, Grauer’s rush warbler, and Ruwenzori batis. This dense rainforest offers an incredible diversity of birdlife.
Before leaving Nyungwe, explore the Gisakura Tea Estate, home to various sunbirds and warblers. Drive back to Kigali, stopping for more birdwatching at wetlands along the way.
Visit Umusambi Village, a wetland sanctuary for rescued grey-crowned cranes and other bird species. Spend the morning birdwatching before transferring to the airport for departure.
