what you need to know before visiting uganda

The “Pearl of Africa,” is a breathtaking travel destination known for its diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, and warm hospitality. Here’s what you need to know before traveling to Uganda.

Most travelers need a visa to enter Uganda, which can be obtained online via the Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit System or upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport. Single-entry tourist visas cost around $50, while the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) allows travel to Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry into Uganda. Other recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria is prevalent, so taking anti-malarial medication and using mosquito repellent is advised

Uganda’s official currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX), though US dollars (issued from 2013 onwards) are widely accepted in hotels, national parks, and select businesses. ATMs are accessible in major cities, and Visa/MasterCard is commonly used in high-end establishments. However, carrying cash is essential for small transactions and rural areas. As of February 2025, 1 USD is approximately 3,688 UGX, though exchange rates may vary.

Ugandans are friendly and hospitable, with diverse cultures and over 50 ethnic groups. English and Swahili are widely spoken, but learning basic Luganda phrases can be helpful. When greeting, a handshake is common, and modest dressing is appreciated, especially in rural or religious settings.

The main entry point is Entebbe International Airport (EBB), located about 40 km from the capital, Kampala. Public transport includes boda bodas (motorcycle taxis), matatus (shared minibuses), and special hire taxis. For longer distances, private car rentals or domestic flights are available. Road conditions vary, with rural areas having fairly paved roads.

Ugandan food is diverse, with staples like matoke (steamed bananas), posho (maize porridge), and Luwombo (stewed meat or chicken in banana leaves). Street food options like Rolex (rolled chapati with eggs) and grilled meats are popular. Most restaurants cater to various dietary preferences, but vegetarian options may be limited in some areas.
